History of Aberystwyth University
Aberystwyth University was founded in 1872 by its first principal Thomas Charles Edwards. It became the first institution in Wales to offer courses in a range of subjects, including chemistry, modern and ancient languages, and mathematics. Over the following decades, the university would grow significantly, with departments of music, physics, and Welsh language and literature opening up. Today the university boasts a wide range of buildings, facilities, and departments, with the university’s main campus set on Penglais Hill, with stunning views over the town of Aberystwyth and out into Cardigan Bay.
Academics
Aberystwyth University comprises four faculties: The Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; The Faculty of Health, Earth, and Life Sciences; and the faculty of Business and Physical Sciences.
Faculty members are actively engaged in research on various topics, including archaeology, art history, botany, chemistry, classics and ancient Greek studies, computer science and information technology (CIS), criminology and psychology.
Students can choose from over 100 undergraduate degree programs at Aberystwyth University, with popular courses including geography with environmental studies, politics with philosophy or international relations, and psychology with criminology.
Student Life
Aberystwyth University has a strong tradition of student societies and clubs, with over 100 active groups. These include the Aberystwyth University Men’s Rugby Union, part of the national university league and plays against its counterpart universities; the Comedy Society; and the Student Radio Station, which broadcasts during term time.
Students can also make use of the university's sports centre (which includes two indoor swimming pools), as well as its gymnasium, squash courts, running track, and climbing wall. All students at Aberystwyth are eligible for membership at a discounted rate.
The university’s main library is the Hugh Owen Library which is open 24 hours a day during term time. It boasts thousands of books and access to journals and databases on computer terminals or by wireless connection throughout the building. The university boasts very high levels of student satisfaction.
