Aberystwyth: An Overview

Aberystwyth is a coastal town located on the west coast of Wales. The town is the largest in Ceredigion County, making it an ideal base for exploring the rest of the region (plenty of amazing locations to explore). The town is named after the River Ystwyth, which meanders through the town’s centre. Surrounded by three hills and two beaches, you’ll notice Aberystwyth has an incredibly cosy, remote feel – making it the perfect location for city dwellers in need of a break from the hustle and bustle.

Aberystwyth is principally known as a university town, and is the centre of learning for Wales.  It is home to both Wales’ National Library and its largest arts centre.

Activities in Aberystwyth

Once you’ve arrived in Aberystwyth and are itching to explore, we recommend taking a hike along the Borth Coastal Path. This 4-mile trail leads you to the beautiful beach of Borth, where you can soak up the sun and enjoy the incredible views. Borth is also a great place to spot wildlife, particularly during the breeding season.

Don’t fancy walking 4 miles? You only need to take a simple stroll along the seafront’s Victorian promenade to see the beauty Aberystwyth has to offer - with its rows of colourful buildings and expansive coastal vistas. You could also hop on the Cliff Railway, and enjoy the views on the longest funicular electric cliff railway in Wales – and it’s been in operation since the 1800s! There are also plenty of indoor activities in Aberystwyth if that’s more your style. Visit the National Library of Wales, explore the vibrant St. Michael’s church, or venture into the ruins of Aberystwyth castle.

Aberystwyth Food and Dining Options

Aberystwyth is known for its many restaurants serving a variety of cuisines, with options ranging from Asian fusion to Italian food. If you’re in the mood for Italian food we’d recommend Little Italy – they serve delicious seafood and pasta. However, if you’re searching for a hearty, British meal, we’d recommend our very own Park Kitchen, located at Park Lodge Hotel. We offer freshly prepared, home-style cooking with ingredients sourced from local farms – including delicious local lamb and beef.

For dessert, you can’t go wrong with a slice of cake. There are plenty of British-style tea shops in Aberystwyth, offering a wide selection of delicious cakes and other treats. If you’re looking for something a bit more unique, we recommend trying Welsh cakes - Welsh cakes are often served with tea and are a traditional Welsh treat – something we recommend everyone experiences!

What to see in Aberystwyth

As a coastal city, Aberystwyth has many scenic spots that are perfect for exploring. If you’re after scenic ocean views we’d recommend Aberystwyth’s south beach and harbour – it’s much quieter than the town’s main north beach and features gentler, sloping beaches. If you want the perfect place to catch the sunset, then a trek up to the top of Constitution Hill is more than worth it. It’ll take you about 40 minutes, but you’ll be rewarded with cliff-top views and one of the most stunning sunsets in the UK.

The Aberystwyth Castle is another popular tourist attraction. The castle is believed to have been built sometime in the 13th century and is one of the best-preserved examples of a medieval fortress in Wales.

Where to stay in Aberystwyth

Since Aberystwyth is a popular tourist destination, you’ll find many lodging options to choose from. If you’re looking for an affordable hotel to stay in, there are plenty of cheap chain hotels, such as Travelodge or Premier Inn, that may suit your needs. However, in our opinion, Park Lodge Hotel offers the best value for money. With our new refurbishment and number 1 rating on Tripadvisor.com, you’re not going to find a better value place to stay in Aberystwyth!
